Pond Temps & Are your covers off?

Post by Martin R »

Thought I'd start a thread and find out whether everyone now has their ponds covers off after winter, and what temperature their running at currently?
I didn't cover this winter because of Koi health problems in Late Autumn (didn't want to lose a Koi and not find it for days :o ).
My heating was installed in October, and I've run at 18°C over winter. Up to 20-21°C now. Gas Bill ? Don't ask !!!

The up side is my Koi are thru' the worst of the problems now, and feeding like mad :D

Hi Martin,
Both of my ponds are still covered, the unheated one is at 9.8deg and the heated one 15deg. Most likely wait until the daytime ambient temps rise a bit before taking the covers off.
The worst part about the one pond being heated and the other not, is you cannot transfer koi easily between ponds. Also the spring temps vary so much it is not good for the koi in a varying water temp.By keeping the covers on keeps the temp more stable.
Roll on the Summer.

Well my covers are off during the day now, but going back on during the night. With being heated the ponds been at 12 degree's for the last 3 months, as the sun heats the water I'm altering the thermostat upwards. Believe it or not at 12.6 deg after three days of some sun.
