Re: ARCEN 2008
Hi,
Certainly a Koi of some volume, I suppose I could find room for it
The shiroji looks to be very good, but I would prefer more sumi, but what there is well placed.
Did you go to the show?
Dave.

Re: ARCEN 2008
Hi Dave, I would have liked to have gone to Arcen this year but with only just moving house and other things it wasn't to be this year. Maybe next year.
It is quite a striking koi isn't it, not everyones cup of tea I suspect but then discussing koi is always going to be down to individual tastes and preferences. I quite like the shape too. The white ground is good which the koi has done well to maintain as a lot of koi can turn quite pink with stress on show days. It is interesting you would prefer more sumi. I quite like the balance. What do you think of the sumi by the gill plate ? does it add or detract do you think ?
Maybe some other guys mike like to comment too ?

Re: ARCEN 2008
Hi Garry,
I think when looking at a koi, we do tend to look at potential area's at fault if you can call them that, rather than look at the positives the koi has, and this koi certainly got plenty of those. The beni is superb with good sashi and kiwa, the shiroji I have already mentioned and credit it for staying so white even in a show vat.
I could find room for it, but doubt that I could keep it.
Dave.

Re: ARCEN 2008
Hi Dave, yes I agree about looking for faults, this can become obsessive with some koi keepers. When it comes to pond fish, or should I say pond koi, faults play a much more minor role in your choice of koi. If you like the koi and can live with it's so called faults then great. You are judging the koi by your own standards and not the show standards of a judge. BUT, when it comes to showing koi you have to be much more aware of faults. What you percieve as a minor fault could well be seen as a major fault by a particular judge. Another judge may play the same fault down more. Hence we get some heated debates after a show as lots of people disagree with the judges placings.
Do you show your koi Dave ?

Re: ARCEN 2008
Hi Garry,
No, I do not show my Koi, they are not good enough
I would be a bit apprehensive about transporting them around the country. I applaud the keepers who do, but I think it does put a lot of stress on the koi and possibly the owners.
I think, I will just continue to enjoy them in my pond.
What do others think about it? To show or not?
Dave.

Hi Dave, transportation can be a problem if not done properly. I've shown koi quite a few times around the country and thankfully every trip was okay. Essential kit - heavy duty plastic bags, even then the koi need to be double bagged - oxygen is a must - good quality elastic bands - good sturdy cardboard boxes, or you can buy purpose made boxes - and make sure the boxes are side on to the front of the car so the koi aren't banging their noses everytime the brakes go on. Stressful ? it can be but after a few shows the koi appear to get used to it and you get better at bagging.
As to show or not to show, in my opinion shows can be a good thing. Take the National for instance. Where else are you going to see such quality koi all in one place ? I've been lucky in the past and I've got to see these koi in their owners ponds. But others may not be so lucky and never get to see such koi in the flesh. I will certainly show koi again if I get the opportunity.
