Re: Spring is nearly here!

On the subject of avian winter visiters, I saw my first Fieldfares this winter in Denbigh town, normally I see them stripping the berries off the holly tree at the end of our back garden but this year I was totally amazed at where I saw them. We took our two new rescue Bichons for their first haircu...

Re: Spring is nearly here!

Llyn Brenig 28-10-2008.jpg I took some surprising pictures one Autumn some years back, a very early snow fall in October. I had been to Bettws y Coed to see the salmon run after a heavy rain storm the previous night and about one oclock the skies darkened and it started to snow. We travelled back a...

Re: Spring is nearly here!

Well, another Christmas is over and done with and despite Boris attempting to cancel Christmas this year it happened anyway. Call me cynical in my old age but;- folk seem to have forgotten that Christmas is celebrating the birth of Christ and not partying and generally having a good time, it,s a hol...

Re: Spring is nearly here!

That is some photo of the heather and pines on Moel Famau Colin, picture perfect as they say! The picture you posted of Cadair Idris has some mixed memories for me, I my brother in-law who was born in Dolgellau had requested that when he died he wanted his ashes scattered on the summit. One of our f...

Re: Spring is nearly here!

Looks like you'll have a good crop of plums this year Colin. That's an impressive Magnolia; it would look nice in your back garden! Bodnant Gardens in the summer of 2010 is where I first came across Ian Sturrock who I got my first Denbigh plum tree from. I was talking to a gardner there and we got o...

Re: Spring is nearly here!

Spot on with my prediction of plum trees flowering, these are the trees I planted to pollinate my Denbigh plum tree.
They're fully out today on the Victoria plum and on the other trees, worryingly few bees or hover flies about as yet though, this cold snap is the cause, see picture.

Re: Spring is nearly here!

This is possibly the same Great Crested Newt I found on Saturday night. I took pic after I'd moved it to a safer place on rockery, I'd found it in a hollow in soil under a large pot in my greenhouse. It's a whopper, around six inches long and looks well fed! This was on the Sunday morning; it was hu...

Re: Spring is nearly here!

The time of the frogfest is nearly over and this year is another bonus year as we are overwhelmed again with frogspawn. The sad thing about that is last night I went out on a really mild night about ten when I heard croaking and discovered the toads have now turned up on cue but theres no room once ...

Re: Spring is nearly here!

With going out to check my filter twice a day this week I can appreciate the frog chorus first hand. They're at it croaking 24/7 and now we have not only frogspawn in two wildlife ponds but also in my by-passed veg filter and also in the Nexus again. My Koi pond is back to crystal clear but now minu...

Re: Spring is nearly here!

I had to grasp the nettle today and treat my pond with Oase blanket weed treatment, the trails of weed were blocking my filter too often so out it came. The Catch 22 situation over this last warm period was it made the algae bloom but, it was warm enough for treatment to work. Now it's flushing my f...
